POLICE DUTY SOLICITOR SCHEME IMPLEMENTATION: ADVISORY COMMITTEE EXTENDS VISITATION TO COURTS, OTHER DETENTION FACILITIES
… As High Courts, Magistrates, and Sharia Courts Judges Commended CP Gumel for his Exemplary Police Leadership, Outstanding Commitment to Duty, and Selfless Service Since his Assumption of duty as Police Commissioner in Kano, in Particular is the Recently Inaugurated Advisory Committee on Police Duty Solicitor Scheme (PDSS) under the Police Force Order No: 20 being Recording Huge Successes Since the Commencement of its Implementation in the State.
The members of the public are welcoming the Kano State Police Duty Solicitor Scheme (PDSS) Advisory Committee for recording successes as its set goals are achieved by undertaking a series of visits to Police Formations, Correctional Centres, and Judicial Facilities in the State. Just yesterday, the Committee completed the two-day visit undertaken by its members between the 5th and 6th of March, 2024, during which they inspected without prior notice some randomly selected police divisions and the New Correctional facility in Janguza and Kurmawa as well as the Goron Dutse Remand Home. Also paid surprise visits to the High Courts complex located along Miller Road, the Magistrates Complex located at Nomandsland, and the Shari’a Court Complex located at Kofar Kudu.
- These visits were aimed at assessing the facilities’s functionality, carefully observing the condition of the detainees, and the judicial processes as well as identifying areas for improvement towards enhancing better service delivery as contained in the provisions of the PDSS and in line with the Administration of Criminal Justice Law ACJL). The Committee which is made of members drawn from the police, the courts, MBA, Legal Aid Council, National Human Rights Commission, the state Public Complaint andAnticorruptionn Commission (PCACC), the National Orientation Agency, and Civil Society engaged with the police investigators, prosecutors, court duty personnel, some Judges at the respective courts and the relevant stakeholders where members observed the proceedings at some of the courtrooms, held interactive sessions and conducted thorough evaluations.
- The visit which was led by the Commissioner of Police of the State, CP Mohammed Usaini Gumel, FIPMA, psc is to reaffirm the commitment to the Public that the scheme is committed to changing the narratives with respect for the fundamental rights of all citizens from arrest, detention and commitment to court processes and enhancing qualitative legal services and ensuring justice is fairly administered in Kano State.
- On the final note, the Commissioner of Police, assures the public that the Police, the Correctional Service, and other Justice Sectors will continue to ensure just and fair implementations of the innovative provisions in the facilitation of effective administration of criminal justice for all citizens. The CP also extends his gratitude to all those involved in facilitating the visits and looks forward to more collaboration
